Rural hospital benefits from telemedicine

There is a new people’s hospital in Tongsinhung-ri located at the tip of the Jaeryong Plain in Jaeryong County, South Hwanghae Province.

The cosy, two-storey hospital that blends in well with the rural landscape is furnished with over 10 rooms for special treatment and sophisticated homemade medical and experimental apparatuses.

The hospital is also involved in the telemedicine system whereby it is connected to such central hospitals as the Pyongyang Medical College Hospital of Kim Il Sung University, Pyongyang Maternity Hospital and Okryu Children’s Hospital. It is also linked online to provincial, city and county hospitals.

“It is dreamlike reality in the countryside that we can keep in constant touch with celebrated doctors in Pyongyang as well as those at provincial and county hospitals as we work in our hospital,” said the director of the hospital.

Under the system the hospital staff have achieved successes in the treatment of patients.

They can hold emergency consultations at any time to share views with proficient medical workers of hospitals at higher levels and diagnose illnesses and treat patients accordingly.

Most recently they made a correct diagnosis of fetal groan and ensured the safe delivery of a multiple-pregnant woman with the help of obstetricians of the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital.

They also raise the rate of success in treating rheumatoid arthritis with the assistance of doctors of the other central hospital.

Since the introduction of telemedicine the rate of referral to superior hospitals has decreased by 50 percent while the doctors’ practical abilities have seen a remarkable boost.

Through this system latest medical science and technology are disseminated and training courses are given by medical workers at central hospitals, which provide the hospital doctors with opportunities to learn different diagnoses and cures for various diseases and apply them to service.

All the doctors of the hospital attend online consultations irrespective of their specialities to acquire various treatment methods and broaden their horizons.

They unanimously say telemedicine is indispensable in raising their abilities as well as in treating patients.
