Kumgang Bellflower, a perennial herb of the Campanulales family, was discovered in Mt. Kumgang in 1909. The stem is 15-70 cm tall and hollow. Its leaves are alternate, but in the upper part of the stem they grow thick. They are egg-shaped or long oval and sharp-tipped with jagged hems. Between July and August one or more beautiful bell-like flowers come into blossom hanging down from the top of the stem. The flower is bluish purple and 2.5-3.5 cm long and 1.2-1.8 cm in diameter. The corolla is divided into five petals at the fringe. The flower has five stamens. The fruit is a seedball and ripens in autumn. It grows in shady places of deep mountains and is cold-resistant. As a decorative plant, it grows well in humus soil of good draining in the shade of trees. It propagates by seed or by dividing roots. The beautiful Kumgang bellflower is a valuable plant of scientific significance not only for explicating the evolution of the Korean flora but for learning the relations between the Campanulales and Compositae families. The stocks of Kumgang bellflowers in Manphok Ravine and the recesses of Piro Peak in Inner Kumgang and in the region of Manmulsang of Outer Kumgang have been registered as natural monuments and are protected in Korea.
