Lake Chon on
Mt Paektu (2 750m), the most famous mountain in Korea, is the habitat of
Salvelinus malma morpha chonjiensis.
There were no fish but only lower aquatic organisms in the lake with cold water of low fertility. In July 1960, the Korean ichthyologists released the chars they had caught in the Tuman and Amnok rivers. The chars have acclimatized themselves to the climatic and hydrological conditions of the lake.
Inhabiting
in the southernmost and the highest place in Eurasia in terms of their
distribution, they are protected and propagated as a natural monument of
academic significance.
