Rhododendron, an evergreen bush belonging to Ericaceae, occurs in the northern highlands of the DPRK. It is 20 to 50 cm high.
In general, it is raised as an ornamental plant. According to Koryo medical therapy, its leaves are used in making depressant, anti-inflammatory and other medicines, and its decoction is effective in treating arthritis, articular edema and neuralgia.
Designated as a natural monument, rhododendrons occur in groups in the wide areas in and around Mt Paektu. They are under special protection.
Rhododendrons in full bloom in snow add beauty to the scenery of Mt Paektu, to the admiration of the people.
