The world-renowned Mt Kumgang was registered as a world biosphere reserve in 2018, as it offers wide habitats and biodiversity and is located in an important place in the aspect of global biological boundaries.

As most of regions are preserved as in nature, the ecological environment of the mountain offers wonderful habitats for the wildlife. It also serves as a very important region in studying the ecological and biological evolution followed by the ice age. 

The biodiversity of Mt Kumgang with rich species of fauna and flora featured by the peculiar physiographic and climatic conditions is of great academic significance, adding more to its value as one of celebrated mountains in Korea and a world-renowned mountain.
