Phungsan is a dog indigenous to Korea, which has been loved by the Korean people for thousands of years.

While breeding the dog, Koreans have created their own unique and excellent culture related to it.

The home of the Phungsan is the area of Kim Hyong Gwon County in Ryanggang Province, which was called Phungsan County in the past. It can be said the dog resembles the spirit of the Korean people.

The dog is very clever and usually mild-tempered. It is amiable to its owner but becomes very furious to its rivals. Though its body is smaller than that of Western dogs, it is very nimble and tenacious, and fights against any beast to the last without giving it up.

Thanks to the nature conservation policy of the government of the DPRK, the dog was registered as a natural monument of the country in April 1956 and the “culture of loving the Phungsan” was inscribed on the list of national intangible cultural heritage in 2022.
