Hwangryongsan Fort

   Hwangryongsan Fort, built in the period of Koguryo, is located on Mt Osok in Okto-ri, Ryonggang County, Nampho Municipality.

   The fort is 6 620m round and the steep cliffs of Osok and other peaks are natural walls.

   It is very durable as its walls are 10 to 11m high on average, and the bottom of the walls is 6 to 8m wide and the top 3.5 to 4.5m wide.

   The fort has four gates in the east, west, south and north, which are favourable for the traffic of people and defence. In the past there were gatehouses on them. At present, there are the sites of the gates. 

   The fort had rich resources of water. According to old records there were ten springs and three ponds.  Still, spring water gushes out at eight places all year round.

   On peaks in the east, west, south and north are the sites of command posts. There are many roof tile pieces in the fort and hundreds of tombs around it, dating back to the period of Koguryo.

   The fort played the role of defending Pyongyang, the capital of Koguryo, against the enemy invading on the west.

   It is associated with patriotism of the Korean people who fought to defend their country against foreign aggressors.
