Kuju Fort
Kuju Fort, built in the period of Koryo, is located in the city of Kusong, North Phyongan Province.
In the period of Koryo, Kusong was called Kuju.
The fort, built with stones by making use of topographical features, consists of the inner and outer walls. The inner wall is about 5 023m round and the outer wall, added to the northwest of the inner wall, about 1 480m round.
Built in 994, the fort was repaired several times and used until the closing years of the feudal Joson dynasty.
Command posts were located at excellent places for observation in the north, west and south.
The fort played a big role in repulsing foreign invaders in the period of Koryo.
In particular, the Koryo people fought a death-defying resistance in four battles to defend the fort in 1231, frustrating various kinds of attack means and tactics of foreign aggressors. They achieved a great victory unprecedented in the medieval history of war and further enriched the tactics to defend the fort created in the period of Koguryo.
The fort, which hands down the ardent patriotism of the ancestors who performed feats in the battles against foreign aggressors, is under good preservation.
