NICH Element: Seesawing

From olden times, the Koreans enjoyed seesawing. It is a folk game in which two persons, standing at opposite ends of a long board which rests on a pivot in the middle, compete to jump higher, coming down heavily on the board.

Seesawing is very popular among women.

A Korean saying goes: Play seesawing in January, and no thorn will pierce your sole that year. This means that the game helps the player promote his/her health by training body and mind.

There are various methods of playing the game, including jumping high and showing stunts.

The winner is judged by the height of jumping, which is measured with a scale string fixed on the shoes.

Seesawing has been further developed as suited to the aesthetic tastes of the times into modern acrobatic pieces, instilling a sense of national pride and self-confidence in the people.
